Bleeding heart trail

I took the point,

Assuming the lead,

Putting myself at the focal point of need.

I always looked out out for danger.

scanning the trees on both sides,

Looking at the ground for hazards.

I cautioned your footfalls

Warning of rocks, water,

Roots, brambles, and snags.

And I often turned back to you

Smiling, ensuring your

happiness, safety, and security.

Though I never saw in our walks

tucked deceptively, the spear

held behind your back.

It blended in so well, gripped

Backhandedly, until unexpectedly

It pierced my chest.

I had always wanted to

blaze the trail in tandem

But now I blaze it alone with a bleeding heart.

humbly yours
