The Favorite Pair

Think of your favorite pair of shoes.

The ones that you adored because they appealed to your senses, or served a utility function.

They might have been tough to break in, or felt perfect immediately.

The shine might have been lustrous at the start, but dulled with time.

The color was likely vivid at first, yet faded with age.

The laces were taut and cinched tightly when first laced.

But after so many ties they frayed, and loosed little by little.

The firm structure supported in the beginning, only to sag and weaken with wear.

And the soles were initially rigid, and provided great traction. But after many miles, the grip wore down, and the soles loosen from the bottom of the shoes.

The stitching came undone.

Eyelets fell out.

Rips and holes began to mar the shoes.

Yet they were our favorites.

They fit so comfortably, despite all of the flaws and abrasions.

We sensed an end to the life of these cherished footwear, and we didn’t wish to have to replace them.

The best made shoes, with proper care and maintenance, might be repaired, fixed, and given an almost infinite lifespan.

But there are others, that despite our best wishes and desires, eventually fall to pieces.

We are then forced to search, again, for a new, favorite pair.

Humbly yours,

J
