If you are supposed to trust your gut, and rely on the thoughts in your head, then definitely, certainly, absolutely, do not follow your heart.
It will lead you wildly astray from sense, logic, reason, and rationale. The path it forges will enter the darkest, most dense, forest of confusion.
It will lead you into emotional wilderness, blazing a dusty trail between cactus and rock. It will direct you to the cliff at the top of the canyon, teeter on the edge, and say “Trust me, just jump.”
Follow it, and climb the steep, winding trail to the top of the mountain, approach the mouth of the volcano, and stare in the lava of fiery passion, and the burning molten brimstone of the soul, to take your leap.
Let it point you to the foaming, gushing, churning, and bubbling whirlpools of desire. Follow it as it wades into the shallow waters, through the dragging current to the fringes of the pools. Dive into them, let them throw and toss you, consume you, and pull you into the undertow and drown you.
The heart will take you to frozen, breath-arresting tundras, to moisture saturated jungles, to vistas of incredible beauty, to dark depths of the underground, to abandoned buildings, to ruined castles, to skyscrapers, to gardens, to galleries, and it may even take you to forgotten rooms inside of you that you had put from your mind since your youth.
And though you make a choice, to follow your heart, you will say, “I should have trusted my gut” and, “I should have relied on my thoughts.”
When you let you heart take the lead, you still may think, “I could have heeded my brain, and regarded my instincts.”
The heart may not be always be right. Your brain and your gut have insight. They try to make you avoid pain, sadness, and feelings that drive you insane. We may choose their logic, and reason, and calculation. We may find sound judgement, careful decisions, and flawless rationale are our reward.
But, in light of all ways the heart leads us to be wild, reckless and free; if the heart’s path is the one we choose to follow, if it’s counsel is that on which we choose to depend, and if it is the hand we choose to hold to lead us in darkness…….
Life will be exhilarating.
Humbly yours,
J
