I believe I have mentioned in prior posts that I seek out peppered beers. This fusion weds two flavors that I enjoy, spicy peppers and beer. I have had very poor examples of this style, Cave Creek chili beer for one; and some outstanding versions, Crime by Stone as and example of the exemplary. So when presented with the opportunity to sample another fresh offering, I salivated at the opportunity.
Stone Smoked Porter w/chipotle peppers – However, this one fails to impress me. The smoked porter offshoot excursion has spawned many iterations of the base beer. Some notable mentions are versions with coconut, versions with chocolate and orange peel, versions with vanilla been, and apparently even a mint and tea version. I’ve had a few of the offerings and sadly this one disappoints. The nose has a roasty, barley, typical porter smell with no hints of chipotle. It pours a dark, slightly translucent burnt coffee color, with little lacing retention on the glass. The body is thin and watery with a dust-puff of chipotle heat that barely tingles the rear of your taste buds. It’s a decent draught for the casual beer aficionado, but for those expecting something mind-blowing in the craft beer world, it does not deliver. 4/10
Humbly yours,
