Seconds Between

Supposedly, dreams are projections from our subconscious.  We are told that they are not real.  Many dreams that we experience, we express thanks that they are not real.  Some, in that hazy-consciousness  slipstream, we wish would be real, and would continue on forever, depriving us of the waking world.

As children, nightmares, or a misunderstanding of our dreams leave us to run to our parents or caregivers. At this point, we only wish to be comforted due to our incomprehension.  Later in our development, our dreams are likely to simulate manifestations of our hormonal urges.

How many times have you emerged from a dream invigorated, alert, and all senses at the ready?  Have you awaked scared, and on edge?  Have you surfaced elated and sated?  How many times have you arisen distraught, disappointed, or dejected at the thought that your waking life needed to be addressed, rather than being able to return to your pillow, and to the serenity of your halcyon existence in the mental hologram of a cabin by the lake?

In those dream saturated seconds, time draws you forward so infinitesimally slowly.  It acts like cinematic imagery of an angel pulling the soul from the soon to be deceased, some may find perfect solace, others, absolute torment.

What may we find in the space between oblivion and reality?  In the gap between consciousness and death, might we not experience the most vivid of sensations?  Have you had a dream, where you were a soldier in a bloody war, gnaw at your thoughts through an interminable meeting?  Has the struggle against the zombie onslaught persisted in your mind in the face of hours of typing reports? Have you revisited your dreams of flying while stuck in a gridlock traffic jam? Has your fantasy dream with the red-haired princess caused lustful daydreaming during your time at the gym?   Has the adored model fantasy seeped its way into your morning ritual of coffee with your spouse?  Perhaps the champion-of-business dream persists while you labor over patients in a hospital?

Have you stared death in the eye as the ground rises to meet your terrified face?  Are you on the cusp of climax during a salacious tryst?  Are you giving a masterful oration at an honoring ceremony and simultaneously realizing that you are naked? Are you discovering ultimate treasure in a a long forgotten tomb?  Are you racing toward a finish line, with the lead, and are nudged off course at the last second?  Are you en route to receive your doctorate during a graduation ceremony, only to be halted by the provost, and informed that you technically didn’t drop one particular class in the appropriate time frame, rending you ineligible for graduation?

Are you not encouraged, early on in your life, to follow your dreams?

Humbly yours,

J

  1. Keen observations, J. Hope to chat with you about them soon.
Since we can’t follow all of our dreams, we were likely encouraged, or steered toward following the good ones. : )
